The Medical Genetics Laboratories at Baylor College of Medicine performs a DNA-based assay to screen for the 3 most common mutations associated with Canavan Disease in the Ashkenazi Jewish population: Y231Z, E285A & A305E. Diagnostic analysis & carrier testing is available as part of the CD or as part of the Ashkenazi Genetic Disease Screen, which includes testing for Tay-Sachs (TSC), Cystic Fibrosis (CF), Canavan (CD) & Familial Dysautonomia (FD), Arylsulfatase A Deficiency. Mucopolysaccharidosis Type I & II & Maple Syrup Urine Disease Type 3 are stand-alone tests and not offered as part of screening panels. Only blood samples are accepted for DNA sequencing unless there are special circumstances.
