Support Our Work

Providing information about and encouraging preconception carrier screening requires funding and collaboration. The Canavan Foundation can only continue this work with your help. This help can come in the form of tax-deductible contributions, remembering us in your will, participation in our fund-raising events or as part of our local and national outreach efforts.

Bequests and Planned Giving

In your will, you have choices as to how you name the Canavan Foundation as a beneficiary. Whichever you select, it is important that your attorney knows that bequests should be made to Canavan Foundation, 600 West 111th St, 8A, New York, NY 10025. Our Federal Tax Identification number is 13-3651563.

One possibility is a bequest of a fixed dollar amount. You specify exactly how much you would like the foundation to receive. Another is to give the Canavan Foundation a percentage of the estate. This makes good sense if you don’t have a clear idea of how much your estate will be worth at your death. Finally, many people prefer to designate the residuary estate, or a portion of it. Once other heirs are provided for, whatever may be left goes to your favorite charity.

The following suggested language will be of interest to your attorney: “I give and bequeath to the Canavan Foundation with its offices at 600 West 111th St., New York, NY  10025, ($___, or ___% of my estate, or my residuary estate).”

Please let us know if you’re planning to make the Canavan Foundation one of your beneficiaries, we encourage you to tell us know. We can work with you and your advisors to make sure the bequest is planned, administered properly, and, if desired, publicly acknowledged. Requests for anonymity are respected.

Make the Canavan Foundation your Mitzvah Project

One of the prime goals of the Canavan Foundation is to help build healthy families. Spring Theater Gala

Every year Canavan Foundation supporters gather for our Spring Theater Gala. This is our major fundraising event. We gather before the show for a meal and the producer or director joins us for a fascinating pre-show Q&A. In recent years we have been to "Company," "Ink," "Carousel," "Hello Dolly," "The Audience," "Matilda The Musical," “The Addams Family,” “War Horse," “Death of a Salesman" and  "A Raisin in the Sun." Click here for more information

Help Us Spread the Word

Our goal is for everyone—Jewish and non-Jewish alike—to understand the risk of Canavan disease and other serious genetic diseases, and to be appropriately screened before starting a family. You can help us by distributing educational materials to friends or family, or through your synagogue or other organization.
